Ken Karunas, who barely passes his 10th grade with low marks, fails to focus on studies in 11th grade and instead gets distracted by love. Ignoring his father’s concern and his mother’s trust, he remains lost in romantic infatuation throughout his teenage years. Before completing 12th grade, he goes through three relationships. Just when he believes love is everything in life, an incident occurs that makes him realize that education and family are far more important. What is that incident, and how it changes his life, is what ‘Youth’ tries to present in a way that appeals to youngsters.
Ken Karunas fits perfectly into the role of a school student and delivers a balanced performance in comedy and emotional scenes, earning appreciation. Though traces of Vijay, Dhanush, and Simbu can be seen in his acting and body language, his energetic performance keeps the film lively throughout.
The three female leads—Anishma Anilkumar, Meenakshi Dinesh, and Priyanshi Yadav—add strength to the film by expressing different shades of love, playfulness, and affection.
Suraj Venjaramoodu, who plays the protagonist’s father, realistically portrays a typical father who hides his concern behind anger. Devadarshini, as the mother, plays a familiar role of an innocent and loving parent but delivers it effectively, reminding youngsters of their own mothers.
The actors playing the hero’s friends bring great energy, and their body language and comic timing significantly contribute to the film’s entertaining flow.
Cinematographer Vicky presents the visuals in a colorful and youthful manner that matches the film’s title and enhances the viewing experience.
Though the story feels familiar, G.V. Prakash Kumar’s music plays a crucial role in keeping the audience engaged. The songs are lively, and the background score helps maintain the film’s pace.
Nashin’s editing and Ramu Thangaraj’s art direction both serve as strengths for the film.
Even though it is a story aimed at youngsters, Ken Karunas has handled it in a refined way. By effectively portraying the emotional bond and understanding between parents and children, he has made the film appealing not just to youth but to all audiences.
Despite being both director and lead actor, Ken Karunas does not overly highlight his character. Instead, he prioritizes the screenplay and gives importance to other characters, keeping the film engaging.
Though the core message—that education and family matter more than love—is similar to that of several earlier films, Ken Karunas presents it in an entertaining and humorous manner without any dull moments. He succeeds not only as a lead actor but also as a director.
