The trailer of revered filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s costume drama Ponniyin Selvan- 1 (PS-1) was unveiled at a star-studded launch in Chennai on Tuesday night, with none other than Tamil icons Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth in attendance.
The over three-minute long video, which is voiced by Rana Daggubati in Telugu, opens with wide shots of Chola Kingdom before it introduces a slew of characters beginning with Chiyaan Vikram who will be seen as Aditya Karikalan. Jayam Ravi as Arunmozhi Varma and Karthi as Vandiyadevudu are introduced soon after in shots that befit their respective image(s). Shots of sword fighting, battles, palace intrigue, characters’ spying on other kingdoms dot the trailer as it unfolds more, indicating that there is enough drama to pique the interest of viewers.
The parts of Trisha (as Kundavai) and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (Nandini) are shown having an air of mystery surrounding them, while the trailer also offers glimpses of supporting characters played by Prabhu, Parthiban, Prakash Raj, Jayaram and Sarath Kumar.
A drone shot of a chariot crossing a water body while it is being attacked and the visuals of a ship sailing through stormy waters add to the overall impact of the trailer, which ends with Queen Nandini gazing at an empty throne.
Bankrolled by Madras Talkies in association with Lyca Productions, PS-1, an AR Rahman musical, will bow in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada on September 30. PS1 is the first of a two-part film series.
