Based on author Kalki’s novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, the first part of the movie ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, which is made in two parts, has been released in theaters worldwide today. How is the picture? Let’s see the review.
King Sundara Chola of Thanjavur had two sons named Aditya Karikalan and Arunmozhi Varman and one daughter named Kundavai.
Aditya Karikalan has left Tanjore due to love failure and is waging war on various nations. Arunmozhi Varman, who fights for the Chola land as per his father’s orders, starts a war against Sri Lanka and wins and flies the Chola flag in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, Sundara Chola’s nephew Madhuranthagan is plotting through the minor kings to seize the throne of Tanjore. On the other hand, the Pandyas, who were defeated by the Cholas, engaged in conspiracies to destroy the Chola kingdom. They are assisted by Nandini, the wife of a prominent person of the Chola kingdom, Periya Paluvetaiyar.
Knowing about the problems brewing against the Chola kingdom, Princess Kundavai, with the help of Aditya Karikalan’s friend Vandiyadeva, makes a plan to bring her brothers to Tanjore to foil the enemy’s machinations and save the Tanjore kingdom. Did Kundavai succeed in that plan?, or not? That is ‘Bonny’s Wealth – Part 1’.
Vikram playing the role of Aditya Karikalan, Jayam Ravi playing the role of Arunmozhi Varman, Karthi playing the role of Vandiyadevan, Trisha playing the role of Kundavai, Aishwarya Rai playing the role of Nandini, Sarathkumar playing the role of Periya Paluvettayar, All the actors in the film like Parthiban who plays the role of small poacher, Prakashraj who plays the role of Sundara Cholar have done their job effectively and are 100 percent fit for the role.
Vikram, who plays Aditya Karikalan, who is angry with his family due to love failure, expresses his anger and love through his eyes. Varudu’s aggressive acting and action moves the film briskly.
Jayam Ravi, who plays Ponni’s rich man, has a relaxed yet majestic princely look and reflects that in his performance.
Karthi, who appears as Vandiyadev from the beginning to the end of the film, shows action in the fight scenes and sometimes makes us laugh with his fake speech. In between, he charms beautiful women by speaking beautifully and poetically.
Ravivarman’s cinematography has traveled to suit the story and has managed to make the scenes as grand as possible. He has been very careful in bringing the feelings of the characters and the story unfolding through them to the fans.
A.R.Rahman’s music all the songs are pleasant and vibrant to listen to. But, the mind refuses to stand. While the background music travels well with the story, it’s not in an attention-grabbing way.
P. Jayamohan’s verses are very simple to be understood by all parties. Mani Ratnam and Ilango Kumaravel have written the screenplay to make the epic novel understandable to people.
Thota Dharani’s art, the costume design of the characters gives the feel of the royal era. Srikarprasad’s cinematography keeps the film moving smoothly.
The greatest strength of the film is that for those who have read the novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, the expectation of seeing it as a movie, and for those who have not read the novel, the expectation of knowing what the story will be.
The background of each character, their performances and the twists and turns in the characters keep the film interesting. Especially the characters of the actresses are strong along with the actors and the scenes for them have given the film more interest.
While the battlefield scenes are not awe-inspiring, they are beautifully shot beyond reproach. In many places they have shot scenes that are not graphic. Especially the action scenes at sea are stunning.
The scenes are handled in such a way that the viewers can feel the feelings of the characters and the strength of the characters, not just showing the scenes technically.
The first part ends with a huge sea fight scene, What Happened to Arunmozhi Varman? With the question, it arouses interest to watch the second part.
Subhashkaran’s huge expenditure is the main reason why the novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, celebrated by Tamils, has become a screen epic celebrated by Tamils today.
So, apart from the director Mani Ratnam, the actors, actresses and technicians in the film, all the credit for the film belongs to Subhashkaran of Lyca Productions.
All in all, ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ succeeded.
