Charlie owns his own house in Chennai, where he lives with his son Linga, daughter-in-law Aparnathy and grandchild. Debt problem for Linga as business is not going well. So, he decides to sell the house and solve the problem, so he gets his younger sister Gayatri to come from the village. He tells Charlie that they can sell the house together, which he declines.
Meanwhile, Charlie leaves after saying he’s going to the mall. Suddenly the news comes out that the complex has collapsed and the government announces a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to those who lost their lives. Thinking that her father has also died in the accident, Linga and Gayatri think that they are going to get 20 lakh rupees.After that some unexpected events happen, and what they are is normal with the middle class life, ‘udanpal’.
Linga, who suffers from neglecting her father’s business, has played the role of blaming her father perfectly. He decides to sell the house and put an end to his troubles, and when he realizes that it won’t happen, he gets angry and at some points, he is threatened in the performance by thinking of his father.
Aparnathy’s performance as Linka’s wife is superb. His reactions to seeing the fight between his brother and sister’s share is heartwarming.
Gayathri, who plays Linga’s younger sister, is intimidating in her performance. Husband Vivek gets applause in scenes where he threatens Prasanna with his eyes.
Vivek Prasanna, who plays Gayathri’s husband, makes the film laugh out loud. Although he doesn’t have dialogue, he keeps the scenes moving by providing commentary for the other characters to speak on the spot.
Charlie adds strength to the character with his experienced acting. Deena who plays Charlie’s younger son, Thanam who plays the older sister, the boy Darshit Santhosh, the girl Manyasree, all the actors in the film are impressive with their performances.
Cinematographer Madan Christopher’s different angles make the scenes enjoyable even though the story moves in the same place. He has portrayed the life of a middle class family and their home very naturally.
Shakti Balaji’s music has given life to the story. Realizing that the acting and dialogues of the characters are the strength of the film, he has given ample background music.
The work of film editor G. Madhan and art director M. S. P. Madhavan has also added great strength to the film.
AR Raghavendran and Karthik Sreenivasan’s story, though misguided, is entertainingly told as a comedy.
Karthik Srinivasan, who has written and directed the screenplay, has comedicly told the sinful act of some people for money without respecting human feelings, but in the end, it has been hit on the head by Linga’s son.
Even though the film moves in a single house, the character design and acting of the actors moves the film without any lag.
On the whole, ‘Udanpal’ is a lively commentary film.
