Irumudi Kattu revolves around Ravi Teja and Priya Bhavani Shankar, a farmer couple with a daughter. After remaining childless for several years, Ravi Teja becomes deeply devoted to Lord Ayyappa after praying for a child. His daughter is therefore the centre of his world.
At the same time, Ravi Teja is heavily addicted to alcohol, even though he observes a strict Ayyappa pilgrimage ritual every year.
The story takes a serious turn when a girl from Ravi Teja’s daughter’s school dies mysteriously. Another student suddenly drops out and disappears. Meanwhile, teacher Swasika begins taking selected female students to her house under the pretext of special classes.
Ravi Teja’s daughter eventually discovers the disturbing truth behind these incidents and tries to tell her father so that the girls can be saved. However, his drinking habit and religious observances become obstacles. The film revolves around whether Ravi Teja discovers what his daughter is trying to tell him and whether he succeeds in protecting the girls.
Performances
Known as Mass Maharaja, Ravi Teja deliberately tones down his usual mass image and delivers a performance suited to the character.
His emotional scenes with his daughter are handled with maturity. At the same time, he delivers powerful mass moments when he declares that his weakness is seeing every girl as his own daughter and takes a stand to solve their problems.
Priya Bhavani Shankar, as his wife, and child actor Nakshatra, as their daughter, make a strong impression.
Nakshatra is particularly impressive. She conveys a wide range of emotions through her eyes alone and becomes one of the film’s biggest strengths.
Sai Kumar, Ajay Ghosh, Ramesh Indira, Swasika, Meesala Lakshman, Rajkumar Kasireddy, Kishore Kasireddy, Karthik Adusumalli and Mahesh also contribute strongly through their screen presence.
Technical Aspects
Cinematographer Vishnu Sharma effectively captures the film’s three major dimensions — crime thriller, father-daughter emotion and mass entertainment.
G.V. Prakash Kumar’s music blends naturally into the film without feeling like a dubbed production. His background score particularly strengthens the emotional scenes between the father and daughter and succeeds in moving the audience.
Editor Praveen Pudi keeps the different elements — family drama, thriller, mass moments, commercial entertainment and social messaging — moving together without losing the audience’s attention.
Direction
Writer-director Siva Nirvana deserves credit for taking a simple storyline and presenting it with considerable emotional and dramatic strength.
The challenge of working with a mass hero is handled effectively. The director gives Ravi Teja enough moments to satisfy his fans without allowing the hero image to overpower the actual story.
The father-daughter relationship remains a consistent emotional thread throughout the film, while the mystery surrounding the schoolgirls keeps the screenplay moving with curiosity.
The unexpected twist in the second half adds emotional weight and keeps the audience engaged until the climax.
Verdict
‘Irumudi Kattu’ successfully combines father-daughter sentiment, crime thriller elements, mass moments and social messaging. Ravi Teja’s controlled performance, Nakshatra’s impressive acting, strong emotional writing and G.V. Prakash Kumar’s background score are major highlights.
