The protagonist Kavin dreams of having a love marriage just like his parents. However, when his love fails to materialize, his parents begin looking for a bride for him. Determined that he should marry only someone he loves, Kavin threatens his family through a letter and runs away from home.
The female protagonist Nayanthara grows up without ever seeing her mother and without receiving her father’s love and affection. She dreams of achieving something in life rather than getting trapped in the institution of marriage. However, when her family suddenly arranges a marriage for her, she leaves home against her wishes.
Nayanthara and Kavin, who have both run away from home, meet in Chennai. They become friends and begin spending time together. Kavin starts falling in love with Nayanthara, believing that she is the kind of girl he has always been looking for. But when Nayanthara reveals that she has no faith in love or marriage, Kavin chooses to hide his feelings instead of confessing his love.
Meanwhile, circumstances force Kavin and Nayanthara to pretend to be husband and wife for a few months. Kavin decides to use this situation to his advantage and make Nayanthara fall in love with him. Whether he succeeds in winning her heart forms the essence of Hi, which unfolds with a gentle and engaging romantic emotion.
Kavin, who plays a young man from Coimbatore speaking in the Kongu Tamil dialect, has wonderfully portrayed his character’s longing for love and the disappointment he experiences. His mature performance effectively conceals the age difference between him and Nayanthara. He handles several scenes with great naturalness and also manages to make the audience laugh at times with his comic performance.
Although Nayanthara’s character is from the Kongu region, she retains her usual style of acting and dialogue delivery. She looks particularly radiant on screen. Even though she plays a village girl, her modern costumes make it difficult to identify her character as someone from a rural background. Her screen presence and mature performance add strength to the film, although her age and maturity are noticeable in certain scenes and do not always blend naturally with the character.
Radhika, who plays Kavin’s mother, K. Bhagyaraj, who plays his father, Prabhu, who portrays Nayanthara’s father, and Suhasini Maniratnam, who appears in a special role, add considerable strength to the screenplay through their experienced performances.
Sathyan, Adithya Kathir, and Qureshi provide several hilarious moments. In particular, even Sathyan’s simple inner monologues manage to make the entire theatre burst into laughter.
Although the screen presence of VTV Ganesh, FEFSI Vijayan, Kavya Arivumani, Mirchi Kemi, and Amrutha Srinivasan is limited, they contribute to the flow of the screenplay.
Cinematographer Rajesh Shukla has presented the film in a colourful manner and has captured Nayanthara beautifully, making her look especially radiant.
The songs composed by Jen Martin are celebratory and upbeat, while the background score effectively conveys the romantic emotions of the story.
Editor Philomin Raj has put together the scenes of this simple story in a way that creates warm and pleasant emotions for the audience.
Written and directed by Vishnu Edavan, the film tells a simple love story through an equally simple screenplay, while maintaining a calm and pleasant emotional tone.
From beginning to end, the film moves forward without major twists or surprises, and there is little that the audience cannot predict. Nevertheless, director Vishnu Edavan has done an excellent job of entertaining viewers through the design of the characters and scenes, making them laugh and enjoy the proceedings.
Although Nayanthara looks dazzling enough to make one’s eyes squint, her age and maturity are visible on screen, and this does not always blend convincingly in her scenes with Kavin. This remains one of the film’s drawbacks. However, Kavin’s mature, restrained, and natural performance successfully masks this weakness and ultimately makes the film appealing to the audience.
