A police DSP, Aditi Balan, is kidnapped and held captive by Dushara Vijayan while she is on her way to take charge at a new posting after a transfer. Later, Dushara Vijayan assumes the DSP position in Aditi Balan’s name and begins investigating an upcoming government examination scam in that area.
Dushara Vijayan, who initially believes Aditi Balan was kidnapped because of the scam she is about to uncover, soon realizes that there is someone even more powerful behind everything. She discovers that an invisible mastermind is using police officers and government officials as pawns to carry out the scam.
Who is this unseen person? Did Dushara Vijayan uncover the scam and its background or not? The story, told with the intention of bringing hidden truths to light that have never been shown on screen before, is what ‘Exam’ is about.
Government jobs and public positions play a crucial role in improving the standard of living of middle-class people and giving them social recognition. The film emotionally portrays how the hard work of such people—who study rigorously for these opportunities—is stolen for the sake of power, status, and money through large-scale exam scams.
Director Sarkunam breaks the stereotype that web series must only be crime, suspense, thriller, or horror to be engaging. He proves that socially relevant stories can also be told in a gripping format. He boldly presents several real incidents and subtly points out the flaws in the government machinery.
Both Dushara Vijayan and Aditi Balan, who play the lead roles, have performed their parts well. Dushara Vijayan’s intense performance reflects the struggles of poor students who, despite hard work, lose out due to money and power. Aditi Balan effectively portrays the mindset of the upper class, who believe anything can be achieved through shortcuts if one has money.
Since the story revolves around government exams and the police department, many actors appear as police officers. Even though many of them are relatively unfamiliar faces, their performances strengthen the characters.
Public Star Thurai Sudhakar, who plays Sub-Inspector Chelian, once again draws attention with his natural performance. As a key character with an important twist in the screenplay, he initially creates expectations that he will play a major role, but even though he disappears for a while, he makes a strong impact in the climax and earns appreciation.
The music, cinematography, and editing are all very neat and effective. Since the story takes place mostly in a hilly region, the visuals are pleasing to the eye. The background score focuses more on the emotions of the characters rather than just enhancing speed or excitement. The editing keeps the narrative flowing without lag.
Director Sarkunam has presented the government exam scams that happened in Tamil Nadu in a realistic manner, staying close to real incidents. He explains in detail how such scams happen and through whom they are carried out. Although he does not offer a clear solution to stop them, he effectively highlights how middle-class people are affected.
While the first three episodes are highly engaging, the lack of the same intensity in the later episodes is a minor drawback. However, without any compromise, the director has addressed an important issue that has not been properly discussed before and has successfully delivered it as an engaging web series.
