MBA student Raghav Ranganathan, the protagonist, possesses a mysterious ability that allows him to enter a photograph and discover what happened within the scene captured in it. While his friends believe that this is a power given to him by God, Raghav believes that his ability has a scientific explanation.
Raghav, who is an ardent fan of a particular actress, is also trying to find ways to meet her in person. During this period, he becomes friends with Yamini Lakshmanan, a sex worker. As Raghav develops a close friendship with Yamini and begins to care deeply about her, she suddenly falls from the third floor of an apartment building and dies.
Although her death is confirmed to be a murder, the police investigation slows down due to a lack of evidence. Meanwhile, Raghav also tries to use his extraordinary ability to uncover the background of the murder and identify the killer, but he too fails.
However, Raghav remains determined to find the murderer at any cost. At the same time, the police continue their investigation in their own way, attempting to catch the culprit with proper evidence. Who eventually finds the killer? Who is the murderer? Why was Yamini killed? ‘Beep’ attempts to answer these questions through a science-based crime suspense thriller.
The actor who plays Raghav fits perfectly into the role of an exceptionally intelligent man possessing an unbelievable scientific ability. Raghav conducts an investigation that even challenges the police. Although he talks a little too much in several scenes, his performance does justice to the character.
Yamini Lakshmanan, who plays the character of the sex worker Sunaina, appears in revealing outfits as well as sarees and is presented in a glamour-oriented manner. She has also delivered a decent performance throughout.
L. Shanmuga Sundaram, who plays Professor Chidambaram, carries an innocent expression that makes his actions surprisingly amusing. His performance, particularly the way he maintains an innocent look according to the character, adds strength to both his role and the film.
Aachiarya, who plays Nayana Kapoor, along with Prerna Khanna, Arun Mohan, Shravan Ramakrishnan and Juhi Sharma, who play the protagonist’s friends, as well as Nithish, who plays the police inspector, and Balaji, who plays the sub-inspector, are relatively unfamiliar faces. However, they have performed suitably according to their respective characters.
Cinematographer Pradeep Padma Kumar, composer Prashanth Vihari, editors Abhishek and Vignesh R.L, art director Umesh Kumar, and stunt director Ram Kumar have worked within a fairly specific framework, but they have effectively incorporated the elements required for a crime suspense thriller.
Director L. Shanmuga Sundaram takes an unbelievable concept and gives it a scientific explanation, making the audience feel that such a phenomenon could actually happen. He then combines this concept with a crime thriller storyline, which adds interest to the film.
Although the film is presented as a science-based crime suspense thriller, the director uses several suggestive and playful scenes throughout the first half. The second half shifts the focus towards the question of how the killer will be identified, proving that the film is not merely built around such scenes.
Despite being a crime suspense thriller, the protagonist’s excessive dialogue occasionally makes the film feel tiring. However, even after the identity of the culprit is revealed, the story regains momentum by focusing on how the police and protagonist will approach the killer with evidence and ensure that the culprit faces punishment.
Overall, ‘Beep’ combines a science-based supernatural concept with a crime suspense investigation, offering a thriller that gradually shifts its focus from the protagonist’s unusual ability to the mystery surrounding Yamini’s death.
