A Half-Century of Music That Shook the World: Connect Media, Mercury Movies, and WPP Production Join to Create a Musical Tribute Honouring Ilaiyaraaja’s 50 Years in Cinema

Chennai, May 16, 2026 — In an unprecedented collaboration where culture, cinema, and technology come together, Connect Media and Mercury Movies—who are already producing the biopic of music maestro Ilaiyaraaja—have partnered with WPP Production to create a grand cinematic tribute marking the composer’s 50th year in Indian cinema.

Released on May 14, 1976, the film Annakili introduced music that transformed the very soul of Indian cinema. Even after five decades, Ilaiyaraaja has composed for more than 1,500 films across 9 languages and over 9,000 songs. His body of work continues to stand as one of the most emotionally profound and culturally influential contributions in global cinema history. This celebration is not just a milestone—it is a moment honouring an extraordinary gift given to humanity by a single individual.

“Ilaiyaraaja Sir’s music is not just background score; it is the emotional memory of generations,” said Varun Mathur, Founder of Connect Media. “As he completes 50 extraordinary years in cinema, our aim is to create a world-class cinematic experience. Just as his music has defined films across decades, this project combines global-grade creativity and cutting-edge technology.”

The tribute will be a deeply emotional and visually rich cinematic experience created using advanced AI technologies and next-generation filmmaking techniques. Through emotion-driven storytelling, cinematic craft, and visual innovation, it is designed to bring the impact of Ilaiyaraaja’s five-decade legacy to today’s generation with equal power.

“Ilaiyaraaja’s legacy is not just that of a composer; it is an emotion that has lived in the hearts of millions for half a century,” said Sriram Bhaktisarana, Managing Director and Group CEO of Mercury Group.

“Celebrating that legacy using tomorrow’s technologies is both an honour and a responsibility. In today’s era of accessible AI, this initiative may redefine interest in filmmaking while also reducing production costs significantly without sidelining creative talent,” he added.

WPP Production, contributing its AI and creative expertise to the project, views this as a landmark in the fusion of culture and technology.

“Great works that endure are born at the intersection of emotion, culture, and innovation,” said Karthik Nagarajan, CEO of WPP Production.

“This tribute is a perfect example. Here, advanced AI is not being used merely for spectacle, but to honour the music of Raja Sir—which has been the background score of countless lives across generations.”
